Mainframe Systems Programmers aka z/OS Systems Programmer
Job Description for a Mainframe Systems Programmer
Mainframe systems programmers perform tasks related to the functioning of large, centralized computers. The work of systems programmers focuses on the software that runs the computer itself, also known as “systems level” software.
Who is the system programmer?
In a mainframe IT organization, the system programmer (or systems programmer) plays a central role. The system programmer installs, customizes, and maintains the operating system, and also installs or upgrades products that run on the system.
The system programmer might be presented with the latest version of the operating system to upgrade the existing systems. Or, the installation might be as simple as upgrading a single program, such as a sort application.
The system programmer performs such tasks as the following:

CBT V487 Final Version – October – 27 – 2013
The files are all packaged with PKZIP and are in EBCDIC so you download from here, unzip, upload as Binary (No EBCDIC to ASCII translation) to your mainframe to an FB80 data set. Sequential files are suffixed .DATA and are ready to use after being uploaded (again as Binary). File 1 through 5 are the only files always not packaged with XMIT. Files suffixed .XMI and are in XMIT format so you will need to do a TSO command RECEIVE INDATASET(???) where ??? is the file you upload to transform it back to usable PDS or sequential file. You will need a utility to unzip (decompress) the .ZIP files and I suggest either 7-Zip (free) , WinZip , or RAR.
For latest versions of files that have been updated since the last tape version, please check the Updates page. It is advisable to check the Updates page BEFORE you check this page for the file number that you want, just to make sure you get the latest version of the code
OS/390 and z/OS Freeware by Lionel B. Dyck
Welcome to my website which I’ve dedicated to making available to the ‘world’ software that I’ve written over the years. Here you will find XMITIP, the OS/390 and z/OS E-Mail application (on the TCP/IP Tools page) and many other tools for OS/390 and z/OS. These tools are primarily written in REXX with a few Assembler programs.
Mainframe Programming (muraleedharan.com)
The mainframe continues to grow and transform itself while maintaining its reliability, security and speed. Mainframe skills, however, are hard to find; moreover, it is difficult to train new people as the mainframe environment is not flexible enough. Not everyone can install OS/390, and not eryone can have his or her own mainframe to “play” with.

Defining and Deleting a VSAM File
VSAM data set are defined using IDCAMS utility, IDCAMS is the program name for access method services, it is used primarily to define and manage VSAM data sets and integrated catalog facility
IDCAMS uses dynamic allocation to create the necessary JCL for this new data set, so the sample does not include a DD statement for a new data set.
The command used for defining the VSAM cluster is DEFINE CLUSTER which defines the entry name, name of the catalog , Organization detail like sequential, indexed, or relative, Device and volumes that the data set will occupy, Space required for the data set, Record size and control interval sizes etc.
